In this day and age, technology has taken over all aspects of the way people get information, share information and communicate. This can be both negative and positive at the same time. While it has allowed us methods of contacting one another within milliseconds, it has disabled our interest for simple and more time consuming wonders. One of which is reading a book.
Now, I am not going to be one of those bloggers that reprimand persons who prefer to play a video game, or watch a youtube video. But I will implore you of the benefits of reading a book every once in a while. I know someone may be reading this post and wondering what absurdities, such as leaving their PC for more than 5 minutes, I am spewing from my mind but just read on.
For writers it is a great way to expand on our vocabulary. It is also a great way to allow the brain to relax from work and enjoy a few well written pages of a book. For non-writers, the same rules pretty much apply. There is no better joy and peace in life than allowing yourself to completely fall into the author’s world. I personally view it as a form of therapy. After a long day of work, I log off the world wide web and I snuggle into bed with a good book.
But hey, not everyone is able to sit in a meadow, like the stock photo girl above, and enjoy a good book. For those who are extra busy there are still ways to feed your mind.
- Audio Books! The best part about audio books is that they can be transferred to your iPod or Zune and you can listen while you work or travel.
- E-Books! These can be read from your PC, an e-book reader and phones.
Not everyone knows about Project Gutenberg but it is the prime place for e-books and audio books. They house over 36,000 free e-books that can be downloaded to your PC, Kindle, iPad, iPhone, Android or other portable device. There is no registration fee and absolutely nothing to pay. If you love it, you can however donate some money to keep the site up and running. So go check it out today guys. Get up and go read a book!
